By Andrea Lewis

Plan to attend any of Ivy League colleges available if looking for a mix of prestige and notoriety in a learning institution. A good majority of students dream of securing a spot with the schools, whose mere mention smacks of outstanding performance in education as well as elegance. Becoming a graduate of these universities attracts great recognition from peers together with commanding respect in society.

The learning institutions boast of rich history spanning through many years of success. At present, there are eight schools accredited as Ivy League centers of education including Harvard University, Yale University, Princeton University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Brown University, Dartmouth College and University of Pennsylvania.

All of these schools show up consistently within top nationwide university rankings. These ratings are done by agencies like Princeton Review, U. S. News and World Report. Diverse accounts are presented concerning how the education facilities achieved the reference, with the one most notable being athletic prominence.

Protracted battles for domination of football by these schools are acknowledged as what inspired the title. Stanley Woodward who was a sports writer of the 1930s is rumored to have applied the name in reference to the ivy color of walls in these colleges.

It turned official in 1954 and has been in use ever since. While the term Ivy might have a connection with athletics, these universities are also deeply rooted in excellent academic tradition. All colleges covered by the name apply stringent criteria for admitting students.

The schools keep to high GPA standards and need applicants to exhibit outstanding leadership aptitude and play significant roles in extracurricular activities during high school. You need SAT scores lying within the top percentile in order to secure a spot with them. Getting admitted into learning programs by Ivy League colleges is a fulfilling experience which justifies the extra effort it demands.
